My Identity definition : Poem by Main Uddin

My Identity definition

================
What are you?

I really wanna know

I have all these theories but no evidence to show

For it, it’s strange really for a whole

You look like your black & white but there’s something different

Clearly, there’s another side to the story that I’m missing

Oh, you’re Bangladeshi?

How can that be the case?

That doesn’t mean your indigenous

Your Lungi or beard is the true definition of race.

Oh, I see, you meant Indian.

Really, you’re from the East Bengal?

Your forefathers must have been born in British India

The truths have been released

That must be the reason,

The sunlight didn’t kiss your face

What do you mean you were born in Seven Sisters?

That still doesn’t mean your Assamese

Your Lungi or beard is the true definition of race.

Oh your parents must be Miya

I completely understand

What do you mean your parents are East Bengal rooted?

Is this deception something you planned?

Oh I get it you’re adopted, I finally figure it out

What do you mean I’m wrong?

It doesn’t make sense,

if those are your real parents, why you are labourers?

What does it mean to be the son of the soil

I’ve never heard that before

I only know of the Pragjyotisha,

slithering across the Bay of Bengal

Okay now you’re telling me you’re a mutation

Oh You’ve gotta be joking

The only mutants I know are turtles

My trust is damn near broken

WELL !

My lack of melanin doesn’t define me

But I am a Miya

Just because it doesn’t show in the pigment of my skin

Doesn’t mean there’s no relation to my previous kin

I am proud to be an East Bengal rooted, Miya, Geda, Na-Asomiya

All the labels that are used to define me

I am happy with who I am, and that is my identity.
